A pressure washer that will not start is not always worth replacing. During diagnosis, varnish was found inside the carburetor on this Ryobi pressure washer. That made the carburetor the main engine-side issue to address before the rest of the pressure washer could be tested.
Replacing the carburetor helped move the repair from a no-start condition to a running engine.

Disconnecting the Fuel Line and Linkages
Before fully removing the carburetor, note the linkage positions. The choke rod, governor rod, and throttle spring need to be reinstalled in the same locations during reassembly. Taking a quick photo before disconnecting them can make this easier.
Next, remove the fuel line clip and pull the fuel line off the carburetor. Then disconnect the choke rod, governor rod, and throttle spring.
This step is important because the engine may not run correctly if the linkages are reinstalled in the wrong position. Incorrect linkage placement can cause surging, high idle, low idle, poor throttle response, or starting issues after the new carburetor is installed.

Installing the Replacement Carburetor
The replacement carburetor is installed with the choke rod assembly facing outward and the throttle assembly facing toward the back.
The choke rod, governor rod, and throttle spring are then reinstalled in their original locations. After the linkages are connected, the fuel line is attached to the new carburetor and secured with the clamp.
The air cleaner parts, breather hose, air cleaner gasket, air vane gasket, and carburetor studs are then reinstalled. In the video, the carburetor studs are tightened to 7.2 ft-lbs. Once the intake assembly is secured, the air filter and air filter cover are reinstalled.
Why the Old Fuel Had to Be Drained
Replacing the carburetor without removing old fuel can contaminate the new carburetor. If stale fuel, varnish, or debris remains in the tank, it can be pulled into the replacement carburetor as soon as the engine is tested.
That is why the fuel tank was drained into a safe container before startup. The fuel strainer/filter was also cleaned before the fuel line was reconnected.
Fresh fuel was then added for testing. This step is important because a new carburetor can only work properly if clean fuel is reaching it.
Starting the Engine After Carburetor Replacement
After the new carburetor is installed and fresh fuel is added, the engine can be test-started.
Since this engine is mounted to a pressure washer, water should be connected before running the unit for pump testing. A pressure washer pump should not run dry. Water needs to flow through the pump, hose, and spray gun before the machine is started and checked under operating conditions.
Once the Honda GCV160 starts and runs, the repair shifts from parts replacement to performance testing.
Checking Engine RPM After Startup
After the engine starts, check the RPM with a digital tachometer. In the video, the tachometer wire is wrapped around the spark plug boot multiple times to help get a steady reading.
For this Honda GCV160 setup, the target RPM in the video is around 3150, plus or minus 150, depending on the application. When this unit was first checked under load, it was running just under 3500 RPM, which was too high for the setup shown.
To correct it, the throttle bracket was adjusted slightly backward to reduce engine speed. After a few adjustments, the engine leveled off around 3280 RPM.
This final RPM check matters because the engine must run at the correct speed to cool properly and drive the pressure washer pump under load. If the RPM is too high or too low, it can affect performance and put extra strain on the engine or pump.
Why the Pressure Washer Pump Still Needs Testing
A successful carburetor replacement does not automatically mean the pressure washer is fully repaired. The engine and pump are separate systems that work together.
The carburetor replacement corrected the engine-side no-start issue, but the pump still needed to move water, build pressure, and operate without major leaks or internal problems.
Common pressure washer problems can include:
- Worn seals
- Stuck or damaged check valves
- Water leaks
- Pulsing pressure
- Low pressure
- Internal pump damage
- Air or water flow issues
That is why water was connected and cycled through the pump, hose, and spray gun before testing. Once the engine runs, the pump can be checked under more realistic operating conditions.

Before considering the carburetor replacement complete, it helps to confirm the following:
