Follow our guide to help your pump last longer, run more efficiently, and reduce the need for repairs in the long run.
Pump Installation
1. Install the drive key
If the pump you ordered requires a drive key, you must install it when installing the new pump. Some manufacturers do not include a new key with replacement pumps, in this case, you can reuse the old key.
Pro tip: we apply a coat of anti seize to the shaft after we install the key.
Operation
2. Never let the pump run dry
Turn on the water and let it flow through the pump before you ever start the engine. Even a few seconds running dry is detrimental to the pump.
3. Do not let the pump sit in bypass
Bypass is when you release the trigger, and water continues circulating in the pump. This causes the water inside the pump to heat up, since it is circulating over and over. If your pump sits in bypass for more than a minute, it could cause the pump to overheat and burn up the seals. We recommend turning off the unit if you need a short break or have to readjust your equipment.
4. Avoid Thermal Shock
This relates to bypass mode. If you idle the machine for too long and the pump overheats, then you engage the trigger, the cold water running through the pump can cause thermal shock. Thermal shock can damage multiple components in the pump.
5. Flush Out Chemicals
Detergents and bleach-based soft-wash mixes are hard on seals. Draw clean water through the system for a minute or two after every job to rinse chemicals out of the pump.

6. Condition the pump
This is the #1 pump saving habit. It doesn’t matter if you live in a warm climate where your pump won’t freeze; you still need to condition your pump. We recommend doing this after every use (unless you plan on using it within 48 hours).
Why condition your pump?
- Water is corrosive, letting it sit in the pump between uses can and will cause early deterioration in the pump.
- Prevent freezing: this is also how we prevent pumps from freezing in the winter. Without proper conditioning, internal components can become brittle and crack.
How to condition a pressure washer pump:
Use pump saver: connect the nozzle to the water inlet and spray for 3-5 seconds, then cycle it through the system by turning the engine over (with the engine off). For extra protection, follow this up with another 3-5 second spray.
7. Check the Pump Oil
Check the level and color before and after each use: milky oil means water got in. Change it after the first 50 hours of break-in, then follow your manual.
8. Address Problems Early
